Thinking about trying a sunbed for the first time? You’re in the right place. At Midnite Sun Rejuvenation, we’ve helped thousands of first-time tanners across Western Michigan achieve beautiful, natural-looking results safely and confidently. This guide walks you through everything you need to know before your first session — from choosing the right bed to building your perfect tan.

Understanding Your Sunbed Options

Not all sunbeds are the same. At Midnite Sun, we offer four levels of UV tanning equipment, each designed for a different stage of your tanning journey:

  • Fast — Our entry-level bed, ideal for beginners building their base tan. Gentle UV output with longer session times. Perfect for those just starting out.
  • Faster — A step up with more efficient UV output. Great for those with an established base tan who want to deepen their color.
  • Fastest — High-output beds for experienced tanners who have built a solid base and want to achieve darker results quickly.
  • Instant — Our most advanced equipment. The strongest, most efficient UV output available — reserved for experienced tanners with a well-developed base.

For first-timers, we always recommend starting with Fast. Building a proper base tan is not just about results — it’s about protecting your skin and allowing it to adapt gradually.

What is a Base Tan and Why Does It Matter?

A base tan is the foundation of color your skin builds over multiple sessions. When you gradually expose your skin to UV light, your body produces melanin — the pigment that gives your skin its color and acts as a natural defense mechanism. Building your base tan slowly over 8–10 sessions allows your skin to acclimate safely, reduces the risk of overexposure, and creates a more lasting, even result.

Pro tip: Never skip sessions while building your base. We recommend tanning every other day (not consecutive days) for the first few weeks to allow your melanin to properly develop between sessions.

How Long Should Your First Session Be?

Session length depends on your skin type. When you visit Midnite Sun for the first time, our associates will conduct a brief skin type assessment to determine the optimal starting time for you. Here’s a general guide:

  • Very Fair Skin (Skin Type I–II): 4–6 minutes to start
  • Fair to Medium Skin (Skin Type III): 6–8 minutes to start
  • Medium to Olive Skin (Skin Type IV): 8–10 minutes to start
  • Darker Skin (Skin Type V–VI): Up to 12–14 minutes

Always listen to your skin. If you feel any warmth or discomfort after a session, give your skin more recovery time before tanning again.

The Role of Tanning Lotions — Don’t Skip This Step

This is where most first-timers make their biggest mistake: tanning without lotion. Here’s why tanning lotion is not optional:

  • Dry skin reflects UV light instead of absorbing it, wasting up to 50% of your session’s effectiveness
  • Properly hydrated skin tans faster, deeper, and more evenly
  • Tanning lotions contain ingredients that protect your skin, reduce the appearance of aging, and extend the life of your tan

At Midnite Sun, we carry the full New Sunshine product line — including Australian Gold, Designer Skin, Swedish Beauty, and California Tan. Our associates can recommend the perfect lotion for your skin type and tanning goals. As a beginner, we typically suggest a Pure or Hypoallergenic lotion to start, before progressing to bronzers or tingle formulas.

Understanding Lotion Types

Pure Lotions

No bronzing agents — just moisturizers and skin conditioners that maximize your natural tan development. Ideal for beginners who want to build a base without added color enhancers.

Bronzer Lotions

Contain DHA or cosmetic bronzers to give your skin an immediate color boost while your natural tan develops. Great for those who want visible results right away.

Hypoallergenic Lotions

Formulated without common irritants — ideal for sensitive skin types who want the benefits of a tanning lotion without the risk of reactions.

Tingle Lotions

These advanced formulas increase microcirculation in the skin, sending more blood to the surface and maximizing UV absorption for dramatic results. Not recommended for beginners — tingle lotions are for experienced tanners with well-established base tans.

What to Expect During Your Session

Your first sunbed session at Midnite Sun will be a comfortable, private experience. Here’s what to expect:

  • You’ll have a private room to yourself
  • Eye protection (goggles) are required and will be provided
  • Apply your tanning lotion before getting in the bed
  • Lie flat and try to change positions halfway through your session for an even tan
  • The bed will automatically shut off at your scheduled time

Aftercare — Protecting Your Investment

After your session, your skin’s melanin continues to develop for up to 24 hours. Here’s how to care for your skin post-session:

  • Moisturize immediately after showering — hydrated skin holds color significantly longer
  • Use a tan extender lotion daily to prolong your results between sessions
  • Drink plenty of water — hydration starts from the inside out
  • Avoid long, hot showers which can dry out and strip your skin
